Abstract
An 87-year-old woman developed non-pulsatile headache and jaw claudication without visual loss. Examination showed scalp tenderness and decreased pulsation in bilateral superficial temporal arteries. Biopsy of the left superficial temporal artery showed an infiltration of inflammatory and multinucleated giant cells, intimal thickening, and disruption of the internal elastic lamina, which is consistent with giant cell arteritis. Her symptoms showed a good response to oral prednisolone. In elderly patients with newly developed progressive headache, giant cell arteritis should be included in the differential diagnosis.
